A Finding Nemo, Under the Sea Birthday Party / Movie Night for $100!

My oldest daughter recently turned 20, and she knows I’m a little into themed parties, so she told me I could throw her the party of my choice. Her only request was that I pick something really random that she doesn’t actually care about.

I spent a couple hours brainstorming theme ideas, and decided the best way to pick a theme was to see what the top movie was the year she was born (2003). Finding Nemo was the winner!

Almost no one has done a Finding Nemo party, or at least put it on the internet, so I had very little inspiration beyond what I pulled out of my own head. Since she’s 20 and it was just going to be our family of 7 and my son’s girlfriend celebrating, we didn’t need to really do much. For activities, I had a movie trivia game and we watched the Finding Nemo movie. For food we ate salad (Sea Weed Salad) and mac n cheese with hot dogs on top (Sea Shell and Octopus Pasta). For a drink we had a tropical ocean punch. For a movie snack we made a snack mix of popcorn, goldfish crackers, pretzel goldfish crackers, and blue, yellow, and orange M&Ms. And finally for dessert, the kids helped me make some under the sea cupcakes. The food cost around $30-$40 if I remember right.

The decor was the only expense other than food. And I only spent $55.65 plus tax to get the following:

Fish nets – $6.99
Ocean tablecloth – $5.93
Jellyfish paper lanterns – $15.99
Clear bubble balloons – $12.99
6 beach balls – $10
Blue serving bowl, orange plates, blue cups – $3.75

A few things I already had on hand. The Nemo plush toys, LED lights, shells, streamers, and white and red balloons.

Overall, it was a whole lot of effect for such little money spent!

About Me

I’m a highly introverted mom of 5 who follows the attachment style of parenting. I’ve been stay-at-home mom for over 20 years and have lived in 5 different states. I have a bachelor’s degree in accounting will never use it. My obsessions are home decorating, party planning, all things DIY, neurotic cleaning, Quicken, Disney World, rocket launches, and photographing wild animals and children (which are basically the same thing). I decided to start this blog as a way to carry on endlessly about stuff I like doing.
